António Guterres is the current General-Secretary of the United Nations (UN).

The General-Secretary is selected for five-year terms, with the next selection to take place in 2026.

To become General-Secretary, a candidate must be nominated by a UN member state, recommended by the UN Security Council (receiving 9 out of 15 votes and no vetoes by the permament members), and voted in by a majority in the UN General Assembly.

Guterres was selected as General-Secretary in 2016 after six straw polls on the UN Security Council. Guterres was nominated again in 2021 and was the only official candidate, being recommended unanimously by the UN Security Council and acclaimed by the UN General Assembly.
