Submit any form of media, whether it's a book, movie, show, game, franchise, or even a specific genre. When this market closes, I will release a poll on which users will answer whether they think each option is overrated or underrated, and by how much. The exact wording/format is TBD - I haven't decided if I want to do a numerical scale like "0 through 10" or a verbal scale like "extremely overrated" to "extremely underrated" that then gets converted into a linear scale. People with no opinion will not be required to vote an every work: Depending on the format, they will either be able to skip each work, choose a "No opinion" option, or both.

I will average the results of the poll to determine how over or underrated each option is deemed to be, with 0% representing the highest possible degree of overratedness and 100% representing the highest possible degree of underratedness. 50% means an option is properly rated and will also be used as the default resolution if nobody states an opinion on the option.

Note that here underrated means a higher score. I did this so that the works deemed to be the most underrated will show up first when this market is sorted from highest to lowest (as it is by default).

@PlasmaBallin what happened here?

I still need to make the poll

Nonsense

According to predictive processing, "No surprises" is literally the worst song possible

@Ppau yeah this, imo mediocre, album is consistently a top3 album of all time on RYM, I don't see how anyone could call it underrated.

@dgga I'm calling it overrated, since this market seems to be able to swing both directions

@dgga I like the album and I dislike blanket statements about things being underrated or overrated

I was just making a nerdy joke

@Ppau Oh i was responding to dun mb

@Marnix Me too!

Seems like the username/ID discrepancy is kind of confusing

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency

The book or the show

bought Ṁ10 Foucault's Pendulum YES

@Marnix Could be the franchise as a whole.

50% means an option is properly rated and will also be used as the default resolution if nobody states an opinion on the option.

unlikely to happen, but I think in that edge case scenario the option should be resolved as N/A.

Dark (2017)

Also expected to be a manifavorite. (If you like Dark, depending on what precisely you like about it, I'd also recommend Faction Paradox, or The Devil's Hour. But both of those are so obscure that I don't think anyone but me will vote on them.)

@SemioticRivalry Yeah, with your answer for House of Leaves, you'd really like Faction Paradox.

bought Ṁ25 House of Leaves YES

@Najawin lol my name on this website is from one of the throwaway citations in house of leaves. i'll check it out

@SemioticRivalry The very first book (which is impossible to get legally for less than $100, but, uh, the publishers do not care if you sail the seven seas, it's complicated rights issues) is a novel written in the form of an encyclopedia.

strong up and comer for most toxic comment section on manifold

@SemioticRivalry what an absolutely strange comment from a moderator. Shouldn't you do something about the toxicity then? Or at least point out what exactly you mean by this

@dgga i observe that the market structure is likely to create fights while under guidelines i can't really do anything about it

@SemioticRivalry that is a great explanation. I apologize for my rather combative reply, I was a bit rustled by the toxicity of the comments section

@SemioticRivalry This seems very unlikely given that we have comment sections about COVID origins, Israel-Palestine, and Destiny’s divorce.

bought Ṁ5 Answer #689fbc9bb9b6 NO

@SemioticRivalry I mean, the goal of this will be to pick media that elicits strong reactions in both positive and negative directions, so it's sort of inevitable.

'Infinite Jest' underrated OK broskies...

@Neon150d No one has bought any positions on it yet.

The Jean le Flambeur series

Honestly shocked that Manifold isn't all over this one.

@Najawin Maybe that's the proof that it's underrated. I've never heard of it.

@PlasmaBallin tbf, it is a very early 2010s sci fi trilogy, and makes less and less sense the further we get from that zeitgeist. But it's a trilogy about a post human thief, with heavy references to encryption, game theory, the internet culture of the early '10s. Written by a String Theorist.
