If top-end professional programmers on Jan 1, 2027 are improved by learning to increase their typing speed on a keyboard, this will resolve YES.

I'm guessing most NO resolutions will involve the keyboard and typing being somewhat replaced as an input method.

How will you ever get certain enough to resolve this?

At close time, I'll take a look at who the highest earning programmers are, and see if they do lots of typing at work. Yeah, there's a judgment call there, and not much hard data that I know of. In most worlds, I expect my common sense resolution will agree with this market's judgment. I have not and will not trade on this market.

This doesn't make sense as a market but yes.

There's a big difference between the headline and the fine print here. "A programmer in 2027" and "Top-end professional programmers on Jan 1, 2027" are not the same job description.

Operationalizers gonna operationalize

Of all the things a software engineer could learn or perfect by 2027, this feels like the most superfluous. 😔

Is there any data available on how much increased typing speed improves professional programmers right now, for this to be compared with?

As a professional programmer, I spend a lot more time contemplating other people's awful code and waiting for things to compile than I do typing at full speed. So I doubt differences in typing speed would affect my productivity all that much.

As a software engineer I find typing speed matters more now than previous since chatting with ChatGPT is wordier than googling ;).

But yeah, I think increasing typing speed is of interest to software engineers despite the actual writing of code not being the bottleneck in productivity. You type a lot that's not code, and even when you do write code, minimising the cognitive effort of doing so so that whatever else is in your brain doesn't have to be kicked out to make room is important.

See, I’m too busy typing as fast as possible to contemplate how bad my code is.

Code searching, accessing documentation, typing messages to colleagues - a lot of stuff other than writing code becomes faster if you double your typing speed.
